Jude Law made a surprise appearance at MegaCon 2025 for the event’s Skeleton Crew panel. While in attendance, he revealed not only that Jod Na Nawood had never used a lightsaber before the events of the show, but that he also decided not to practice fighting with a lightsaber before filming.
Via Screen Rant, Jude revealed that he and the showrunners Jon Watts and Christopher Ford “kinda liked the idea that he had zero lightsaber experience”. Screen Rant points out that the actor has experience wielding swords from past projects, but for Skeleton Crew he essentially did no prep whatsoever when it came to handling a lightsaber.
That approach paid off, as Jod often did look a bit awkward when wielding a lightsaber. His decision was likely helped by the fact that Jod never actually uses the lightsaber in a fight, only to threaten people and do the occasional beheading. This tidbit of information also gives us a better idea of how long he actually spent with the Jedi before his master was killed. If she was killed before he even got the chance to train with a lightsaber, it suggests that he was only affiliated with the Jedi for a very brief period.
It might help us better understand his view on the wider galaxy, as we guessed at in our attempt to “Figure out Jod Na Nawood”. For him to have a friendly and supportive mentor taken from him so early in their relationship is cruel and tragic, and would certainly have played a pivotal role in shaping his outlook on the galaxy and his preoccupation with safety and comfort at almost any cost.
Hopefully one day we’ll get to see Jod’s time with the Jedi in a future Star Wars project, ideally in a live action Skeleton Crew sequel or spinoff. But if it ends up being told via a novel or a comic, we’ll take that too.
Josh is a huge Star Wars fan, who has spent far too much time wondering if any Star Wars character could defeat Thanos with all the Infinity Stones.
