‘Star Wars’ Celebration Japan Announces Cosplaying Rules, First Wave Of Hotels Now Available

ReedPop, the organization behind Star Wars Celebration Japan, has revealed a new set of rules that attendees planning to cosplay at the event must follow. Additionally, the first wave of the official hotel block has been made available for people who still haven’t booked their rooms for the convention.

Dressing up as your favorite Star Wars character will still be allowed at Celebration but with the event heading Japan for the first time since 2008, ReedPop are encouraging fans to be mindful of the cultural differences there when it comes to cosplay and travelling to and from the convention and will be enforcing some new rules when it comes to cosplay next year.

To help cosplayers understand the new guidelines Star Wars Celebration is splitting cosplay into two definitions. First is “casual cosplay”, meaning people dressing up in Jedi robes or as Han Solo, for instance. These types of costumes will have few limitations, with ReedPop simply requesting that any capes or long robes be stored in your backpack and taken out once inside the convention center. Prop weapons, especially lightsabers and blasters, are asked to be hidden away on the way to the convention.

Then there are the “intricate cosplayers”, people who will be dressing up in full armor, intricate gowns, as Jabba the Hutt, or like 2022’s Cosplay Competition winner, a Geonosian. The organizers are asking these attendees to arrive in their daily clothing and then get ready on site.

To facilitate this male and female changing areas and storage lockers will be available on site, for a small fee, with reservations opening later this year.

You can read the full guideline to the new cosplay rules on the official Star Wars Celebration website.

In addition to the new cosplay guidelines, the first wave of hotels have also been released to for fans to book.

The hotel block is being handled a bit differently this year with ReedPop dividing the hotels up into waves rather than releasing them all at once. The first wave was also released without any advanced notification so make sure you set up social media alerts and sign up for the official emails as we don’t know if the same approach will be taken for subsequent hotel releases.

The first wave consisted of just four hotels, all a train ride away and mostly in the Disney resort area. It is highly likely that future waves will include hotels closer to the convention center. These hotels booked up quickly but it is always worth checking as availability is likely to change a subsequent waves of hotels are released and people swap their reservations.

One thing we do know is that in December the hotel block will offer three of the official Tokyo Disney hotels – the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel, the Disney Ambassador Hotel, and the Tokyo Disney Celebration Hotel.

You can find more details and access the hotel block on the official site.

Star Wars Celebration Japan takes place 18-20 April 2025 at Makuhari Messe. Tickets for Friday and Sunday can still be purchase here. We hope to see you there.
